I’ll be honest, whenever I win one of these awards 2 things go on in my head.

1) Cool it feels good someone recognizes my talent. And

2) I can’t believe I won… the bigger companies actually campaign to win these things. I DO ZERO campaigning and win anyhow once in a while. In fact, the WDIV best of is a political machine / campaign won by the Michigan DJ Companies and Michigan Wedding Vendor type companies that Facebook it. tweet it, even telemarket for it. As an independently owned dj service here in Royal Oak / Oakland County Michigan, I (not boastfully) don’t take the time to do any of that. SO… though I won the Knot Magazine’s Best of the first year it came out (also the last year it wasn’t politicized) and a few others along the way — this one still feels good to win. Wedding Wire is also nice to win because I can’t skew any of it really. Brides post what they post for the world to see. So, thanks to my customers both past and future. May I always be worth mentioning when the topic of a “great wedding dj” in the Metro Detroit Area becomes the conversation. XOXO – I love you!! Thanks for the kind words!

Michigan or The Islands – An Island Themed Wedding Reception

It was a beautiful day in Troy, MI as Tony and Christy got married in Dearborn, MI and partied at Petruzello’s in Troy.

Location – Petruzello’s in Troy, MI
Bride & Groom – both soon to be doctors and unbeknownst to them I dj’d for 2 of their guests last year in Ann Arbor. Anna and Joe. Anna met them in medical school. Anyway, Tony and Christy were super cool, super polite and personable and just great people to be with. Apples don’t fall far from the tree as their friends and family were just as great to work with.
Facility – well it’s Petruzello’s – The Location is superb and the facility is really well managed with Frank and ma man… Michael! It was well lit as well. Advanced Lighting and Sound tweaked it out with some lights that complimented what Petruzello’s already had. I liked especially the under the table (head table and cake table) lighting. I always think that’s a cool effect. Even if it’s all you light.
Different – they did a nautical theme and had tropical colors in the room, a palm tree gobo on the floor and complimentary colors to give it that Caribbean Jimmy Buffett feel (yeah, I trademarked that description).
Timing – Traffic that day was hellacious all over metro Detroit. I am glad I leave with a ton of extra time for such setbacks because even the surface sideroads were bad. So, they were about 25 minutes late getting there. Between Michael (the banquet manager) and I we bumped some things around and worked it out with the kitchen and staff. Bride was a little stressed over it but I kept reminding her to relax, this was her day. That’s why one should hire wedding pros – we know how to make things smooth no matter what goes down.
Party Favors – They donated “favor funds” to a needy cause.
Music – because of the island themed reception, she wanted reggae and steel band. After being a dj on the Infinity and Ovation Yachts for over a decade, i was well prepared for this music and have to tell you — it was super. It put people into a bright happy mood. Steel band is soothing and it fit with their style. She also had about 25 songs she new she wanted with everything from Rod Stewart to Flo-Rida, Usher and Eric Clapton for her dad. The great thing is the songs were super choices and really didn’t limit my ability as a dj. I should say the choices didn;t handicap me – they were fitting for the crowd as well as the bride and groom. All in all I think the steel band music made me really re-think what i do as a dj. I already know the dj sets the rhythm and pace of the evening but I was re-reminded how being just a bit different can really impact the flavor of an evening. I heard a guy on his cell phone telling whoever that “yeah, they got this whole laid back island thing going with the music and decor, it’s really cool”. Hiring the right dj is everything to making your Michigan Wedding Reception be all it can be.

Food – baked chicken, beef, potatoes, pasta – well Petruzello’s always does a super job with their food. It wouldn;t be a diet my cardiologist would recommend on a daily basis but then again if you want tasty find me a meal that would? I really liked the salad actually. It was a huge family style bowl with plenty for guests seeking seconds.
Cocktail hour – guests were greeted with a pink martini ala the island theme. Music was very much the same as dinner with the reggae stuff and steel band as well as Jimmy Cliff, Steel Pulse, Buffett, Marley, Lucky Brown (Michigan Reggae Guy) and a few others.

Baseball Themed Wedding – Very Cool Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers

I did an event recently for a couple that were both baseball fans of rival teams. It was at Petruzello’s in Troy, MI. If you look at the pictures you’ll see how they named each table according to a pro baseball player’s name. They used vernacular germane to baseball for stuff in the room. For example the head table was named the dugout. The seating cards were baseball tickets and really well done at that. You will see they had themed napkins at the bar for Detroit Tigers and Yankees fans. They also used the tickets to reflect the guests name and their section. Even the barbode reflected the date of their wedding. I’d go on but the pictures sort of tell the story. Remember I am not a professional photographer and these were shot with an iphone on the fly. I am instead “The Most Professional DJ in Michigan”.

Flower-less Wedding Crystal Centerpiece Numbers

I recently did a wedding at Royal Park Hotel in Rochester Michigan and the bride said she didn’t want to do the usual flower “thing”. So, she ordered the coolest custom crystal centerpieces I’d ever seen. They even had numbers engraved on one of the pieces. She then had just a few bouquets on the head table. I will tell you it was beautiful AND Green — by not being green. It might give you the inspiration to go green on your wedding day by not going green!!!

Here is what one looks like and with all the candle light refracting off these crystals it only made it look better. You will notice this crystal centerpiece is cut into a diamond like shape which once again totally fits the day for a bride with a jones for both different and elegant.

Just an Update – I have these for rent if you can’t find them. I thought they were so neat I tracked them down and forked out the dough so my cousin could use them at her wedding. Call me at 248-648-1669 I can UPS them to you. You will pay in full and get a refund for 1/2 the total when they are returned on time. They are 4″ in diameter (across) and rent for $15 each. I have 25 of them numbered 1-25. If you add some other smaller crystal glass pieces and place the numbered crystal glass centerpiece amongst them it will indeed look superb!

Virtual Video Review of the Banquet Reception Facility Fore Lakes Country Club in Port Huron, MI | Kimball, MI
Hi, all I can say is the place was thumbs up all over. From the banquet staff to the building and the view it’s a gem in the outskirts of the Detroit Tri-County Area. I thought as I pulled up it had this southwest / northern exposure thing going on. It’s huge log architecture, stainless steel and tile was all top shelf. Nothing about it was shoddy. With that being said, you gotta like that look in a Michigan reception facility though. The view was spectacular onto the golf course off a monstrous terrace. Getting married under the gazebo overlooking the water features on the golf course made having a ceremony there a no brainer too. Anyway, I’d keep raving but I’ll stop there and only suggest if you’re considering a destination wedding – this place is perfect for that too. It’s just an hour outside of Oakland County and yet it feels like you’re up north (and you sort of are). Keep your money in Michigan and make it easy for guests that don’t want to stay overnight.

Crank up the volume (low levels) and remember – I am a DJ – Not a professional videographer – this was shot with my iphone. I am just trying to help those brides looking for cool venues for their wedding reception in Michigan.

Lyon Oaks County Park Wedding Reception | Wixom, MI

Like all the Oaks Management managed properties this one will live up to the brand. They are well run, clean and beautiful. Lyon Oaks, Glen Oaks and Addison Oaks are all on the top of my list as great places for wedding ceremonies and receptions both. The buffet here, like it’s sister properties mentioned above is top shelf. The interior is spacious and full of natural light with beautiful just behind the bride’s head table and off to the on side of the building as well. The dance floor is super because it’s not oversized and will always look full. Us dj’s love dance floors that are sized right as it helps to keep people coming out to dance. Why? Because nobody wants to look like the only one in the spotlight. It’s a more the merrier kind of thing. Anyway, what more can I say? NOTE: I made a comment about it being a little older of a facility, it is NOT. It’s actually probably newer than a few of them. Some of the others have just had some updates is more in line with what I meant. ALL OF THEM are beautiful.

As a dj here in Michigan I play music for both wedding receptions AND ceremonies. Over the years I’ve definitely become accustomed to being witness to the exchange of vows, as they’re one of the most heartfelt statements one can be apart of, especially if you’re writing them yourself. I really like how Harmonie Krieger sets the stage for your most romantic exchange by giving a few tips on writing original, personalized wedding vows.
